Go Nuts for (Cake Mix) Donuts

Since this easy donut recipe starts with a cake mix, you can make them in any flavour you can get your pretty little hands on.  Now here's a bit of a disclaimer. Before I give you the recipe I WILL say this: cake mix donuts don’t taste exactly like donuts you’d buy at the store. Since they are baked instead of fried, the consistency is a little different. BUT, they are still freakin' amazing. And half the struggle.

Another heavenly thought is that it only takes about 15 minutes to make a full batch of donuts (24-30) using the mini donut press. I’m sure you could also use this recipe in a donut pan to bake full size donuts in the oven, however, I haven’t tried it yet myself. Those pans are sure hard to find.

  • 1 box (16.25 oz) cake mix of choice

  • 1 Tbsp. butter, melted
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. milk

(* or betty crocker icing ;)

  • Sprinkles (optional)

Ok, y'all ready for this?

All you do is mix one dry cake mix with 3 eggs, 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, and 1 cup of water or milk. Whisk the ingredients together until well combined – a few lumps will remain. I found it easier to dump the batter into a resealable plastic bag, then snip off one corner and use that to “pipe” the batter into the donut press, filling the bottom well as shown below.

Once all 6 wells are full, close the donut maker and wait 3 minutes. Open it back up and use a fork to remove the donuts from the pots.

Now, for the glaze! Dip the donut halfway into the glaze, then turn the donut sideways to allow extra glaze to run off.  OR just use some trusty ol' Betty Crocker frosting. Let it firm up on a cooling rack, adding sprinkles immediately.

Boom. Donuts for days.
